Retaining wall structural inspection in Perth Hills - clay soil considerations for limestone walls

Updated: Dec 20, 2019

In this case study, our structural engineering team in Perth assisted with a retaining wall inspection in the Perth Hills.

The Problem:

The limestone retaining wall was constructed to support a concrete swimming pool on the high side. The construction of retaining walls or any foundation requires special considerations on a clay site. In this particular case, the design did not include control joints to allow for movement due to soil being affected by seasonal moisture conditions. This has resulted in cracks up to 20mm wide.

The Solution:

The solution consisted installation of control joints, fixing the cracks and re-pointing sections of the retaining wall. While it was difficult to saw cut across the entire width of the retaining wall, it was deemed that this solution should be adopted due to being relatively cost effective.
